Electrical Concepts Ltd on Virgin radio
Hello,
Something I’ve been planning for a while was to get the company name heard on radio for free as much as possible and I had my first hit last week and it was great I had Christian from Virgin radio’s morning show mention ‘Electrical Concepts’. It’s a big buzz to hear your own company name being mentioned on the radio. So it now begins and I’m going to try and get it on the radio a lot more now!!
Another change in the world of Electrical Concepts (for regular readers) and you may have seen in the title is that we are now a Ltd company, which means I’ll have to be getting new stationary printed up, but not until the old lot is finished up!! I decided to go for the ltd company under the advice of my accountant and it’s benefits of limited liability and because I think it makes the company seem a little more professional than a sole trader!!
I’m also thinking of getting an office but on a high street near me. I think I need an office because I’m outgrowing the space in my dining room and I can sometimes get distracted easily in the dining room. I’ve been looking at office space at around the 300M squared range and found some for around £600/ month and then heard about a shop of the same size for £1000/ month Which at first I decided against, but then I thought that for the extra £400 I’d have a shop on a busy high street which I could have the shop front done up with my logo and whatever I put in the window, and I’ve got quite a few ideas about that!!! I was also thinking I’d have lights lighting up the front and shining onto the pavement would be my logo and maybe on to the other building on the other side of the road my logo would be there spinning around and lighting up!!
I think the shop idea would be good as it would be great advertising, for a little more than the cost of advertising in magazine which (depending on the magazine) costs around £300/ month. It would be there all the time to getting to literally thousands of people a week.
It also has the added benefit of letting people know where the company is, i.e. not a fake address or a mobile number and it WILL look professional too!
Other things happening in the world of Electrical Concepts are we’re getting a 0800 free phone number, which is going on to the van and t-shirts and other marketing materials and hopefully soon I’ll have a good electrician working for me.

PR and shops
Hi Paul!
Great news on the radio spot. How did you get that one? Did you send in a press release or is is word of mouth spreading in your area? I wouldn't be surprised if it is the latter actually because you have been working so much on your networking and marketing over the years (Must be about 2 years now right? Gosh time flies!)
I was wondering if you didn't really need the shop to start with if you could sub-let it, or share it with someone else? That could give you extra income. And lots of extra hassle ;) I like the idea of using it as a PR tool/advertising if you can afford it though as well. Staffing a shop is otherwise hard work because there are so many hours where you could do better focussing on the main business. Or perhaps you should diversify into selling low energy lightbulbs online (it is currently frustrating me greatly that I can't find those for my ceiling spotlights. I need both small and big screwfitting ones if anyone can recommend where they are available!!!!!)

Shops and low energy lamps
Hi Anna,
Yes it'll be coming up for two years in June!! and yes time flies, I'm not close to as big a company as i wanted to be though when i first started and I'm just about getting the branding finished with the t-shirts & website and the like.
Funny how things never go to plan, talking of which i was reading my old business plan the other week and apparently i expected to be in an office with a few people working for me by now, oh well I'm nearly there i guess and near to world domination eh!
As for the lamps (sorry for being pedantic and using the technical term, bulbs are things that go in the ground and become flowers :-) ) i presume you mean R80s or R63s, you can get them from screwfix but I've never liked the quality of the materials from them they are cheap and a false economy
Or you can go here, they're at the bottom of the page.

Although these are a brand called Megaman ? which I've never heard of. I would always go for either Osram or Phillips but i can't find them, so I'm not 100% sure they make them yet but i could ask at my wholesalers if you want.
I'm giving the shop thing a lot of thought and I'll do some research before i do it . I will be opening a lighting shop in the future ( not sure if I've mentioned that before) Lighting Concepts which would be great but I'm not in a position to do that right now as i definitely don't have time to go out working and set up and mind a shop which is why i thought having an office on a main road would be good.
Oh well I'll keep you updated on the details
take care
Paul

What I need is an R50 :)
and then I need the bigger size of spotlight lamp as well, also with screw cap fitting, but large. If I remember correctly. I can't even get to those to check because they are too high up :) And I have no ladder. They work at the moment, but that is one of the reason why I really want the energy saving ones because they last longer and changing the lamps (see practising my vocabulary :) ) is such a pain.
The link doesn't work without registering it seems. It brought me to the "home page being built section"
I might try that later.
Thanks for your help!
